Somerset woman injured when gun goes off in skating rink parking lot

Somerset — A Pulaski County woman was injured Sunday in an accidental shooting.

According to information from the Somerset Police Department, emergency personnel were called to the parking lot of Skater’s Choice, formerly known as Finley’s Fun Center, on Commercial Drive in Somerset, at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived on the scene, officers gathered that Donna Leach, 25, of Science Hill, was injured when a gun discharged as she was opening a car door while in the parking lot of the business.

According to Capt. Shannon Smith, with SPD, Leach and another person, identified as Cedric Wesley, 28, also of Science Hill, arrived to Skater’s Choice Sunday afternoon. Wesley, after parking, removed a Sport Arms .22 caliber revolver from his belt and put it and the holster in the driver’s seat of their car.

“Leach later returned the car to retrieve some items,” Smith wrote in a press release. “When she opened the door, the gun fell and struck the doorjamb or parking lot surface.”

The gun discharged upon impact, and Leach was shot in the upper leg, according to Smith.

A nearby witness called Pulaski County 911.

Leach was treated at the scene by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS and transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

SPD officers were assisted at the scene by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.
