People of Pisgah making a difference
Community News
Commonwealth Journal
When the Pisgah Presbyterian Church congregation was able to purchase and restore the Pisgah Schoolhouse several years ago, they had no idea the impact that this project would have in our community.
In conjunction with the Pisgah Schoolhouse Jammers, funds have been raised for God’s Food Pantry, God’s Helping Hands and Pulaski Emergency Relief Ministry.
The Pisgah Schoolhouse Pickin’ Jam began on July 11, 2006, and every Tuesday night beginning about 6 p.m., musicians (pickers) and spectators (grinners) begin arriving at the schoolhouse, and by 6:30 p.m. the music begins in full swing.
For a modest donation at the door, folks are treated to an evening of down-home music and refreshments are provided free. The pickers sit in a large circle and take turns singing and leading the others in their favorite songs.
The music ranges from old-time favorites like “Wildwood Flower,” bluegrass standards like “What Have They Done To The Old Homeplace,” country classics like “Folsom Prison Blues,” gospel songs like “The Old Crossroads,” to original songs by some of the “jammers.”
Members of the audience will occasionally step into the circle to sing one of their favorites.
In the spring of 2007, the idea of selling homemade jams under the “Pisgah Schoolhouse Pickin’ Jam” label as a fund-raiser for the Pisgah Presbyterian Church outreach programs was suggested. Arrangements were made with a local supplier and sales have been steadily growing, and reviews of the jam have been ecstatic. Some favorite jam flavors available are strawberry, blackberry, red raspberry, black raspberry and blueberry. All jams are available with sugar or with no sugar added and all are seedless.
Free Jam
Throughout this year, Pisgah Presbyterian Church and Pisgah School House Jammers will give a 16-ounce jar of Pisgah “Pickin’ Jam” of choice to each person making a donation of $5 to help support the great work being accomplished by P.E.R.M (Pulaski Emergency Relief Ministry), God’s Food Pantry and God’s Helping Hands.
To receive your free jar of Pisgah Schoolhouse “Pickin Jam,” just give your $5 donation to any member of the Pisgah Schoolhouse Jammers, or you can call Carl at 606-677-2906, or stop by the Pickin’ Jam any Tuesday night between 6 and 9 p.m. Carl can also arrange to meet you at the Old Pisgah Schoolhouse where you can pick up your jam and receive a tour of the historical schoolhouse.
Skaggs hopes to be able to give at least 1,000 jars away this year – which will equal $5,000 donated to charities.
Donations of either your time and/or financial support to any of these organizations is always needed and appreciated.
