The 2008 Regional Science Olympiad for middle and high schools in the south central region of Kentucky was held on the Somerset Community College Somerset Campus on Saturday, February 23.

The team from South Laurel Middle School took home the first place award in the middle school category, while Central Hardin High School won the high school category.

More than 100 students from three middle schools and four high schools participated in the SCC event.

The second-place team in the Middle School Division was the Wayne County Middle School Red Team. The third-place award for middle schools went to the Wayne County Middle School White Team.

Glasgow’s Barren County High School took home second place in the High School Division, while third place went to the Wayne County High School.

According to Somerset Community College Biology Professor Gary Sherman, who organized this year’s event, “The mission of Science Olympiad is to promote and improve student interest in science and to improve the quality of K-12 science education throughout the nation.”

“Science Olympiad gives us one of the few opportunities to celebrate and recognize the outstanding achievement of both students and teachers in the areas of science and technology by awarding thousand of certificates, medals, trophies and scholarships,” Sherman continued.

The winners of the regional competition advance to the Kentucky Science Olympiad which will be held April 14 at Western Kentucky University.

Schools participating in the SCC Regional Science Olympiad were South Laurel Middle School, Barron County Middle School, Wayne County Middle School, Barren County High School, Casey County High School, Central Hardin High School and Wayne County High School.
