Brittany McKee is perfect in Lady Maroons’ 15-0 win

By LARRY WINTERLAND, CJ Sports Writer
Commonwealth Journal

Somerset Perfection is defined as “The quality or state of being perfect or complete” according to the Webster’s dictionary.

On Thursday night, Brittany McKee was both perfect and complete to help Pulaski improve their record to 2-1 on the season as they shutout the McCreary Central Lady Raiders 15-0.

McKee went seven strong innings against Boyle County on Monday night giving up four earned runs and striking out 12 in the win. The bats had no trouble in the opener, crossing the plate 13 times.

Things cooled off against Dunbar on Tuesday as Pulaski would score 2 runs late but see their rally come up short in a 3-2 defeat. That was the first loss of season for the 2006 regional champions.

With a sub .500 record staring Pulaski in the face; they once again turned to 8th-grader Brittany McKee on the mound.

What Pulaski needed was an improved performance and a win.

What they got was a perfect game and a shutout.

“To be honest, we didn’t know she had a perfect game,” Pulaski coach Scott Taylor said. “I don’t really look at those kind of things. To me, all I wanted her to do was get better from her last outing against Dunbar.”

She got better alright.

McKee was dominating right from the start. She never saw a ball get out of the infield. McKee retired all 12 batters she faced. She even went a stretch in the game; striking out 6-of-7 batters. Only three batters from McCreary Central saw more than five pitches during an at-bat.

To put McKee’s performance in to perspective, she threw a total of 45 pitches in the game. On the other side of the mound, McCreary Central’s pitcher, Tanisha Vanover, threw 43 pitches in the first two innings.

“I didn’t really know that I had a perfect game until someone told me after it was over,” said McKee. “I knew I was doing well, but I had no idea it was that well.”

As great as McKee was on the mound, her counterparts at the plate were just as good. They gave the Raiders fits all night.

K.K. Holman lead off the bottom of the first inning with a triple. She would later be driven in by Jessica Randolph.

The next time Holman stepped to the plate, she drilled a pitch deep into the outfield giving her a double. Kristin Dowell would drive Holman in and give P.C. a commanding 11-0 lead at the end of three innings.

It seemed only fitting that the final run of the game was driven in by Randolph, a pitcher playing catcher for the Maroons. Randolph hit one into the gap scoring Chelsey Jordan and sending the Raiders home early.

Randolph went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI’s in the game and was the only player on the field to go perfect from the plate.

Pulaski improves their record to 2-1 and will travel south next week to play in the Florida Beach Bash in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
