On the heels of a Shelby Kosmecki one-hit, shutout pitching performance and 13 Lady Warrior hits, Southwestern downed Somerset 5-1 in the first game of a billed doubleheader at the War Path.
In the pitcher’s circle, Southwestern’s Kosmecki allowed very little Somerset offense in her six innings of work as she struck out 13 Somerset batters and only allowed a Chelsea Felts hit in the fourth inning.
Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors had no problem putting a bat on the ball as seven of their nine hitters had base hits with Sarah Hranicky, Ashley Fowler, Kosmecki, Jessica Pierce and Chelsea Malicoat all collecting multiple hits.
“We hit the ball good and we got some timely hits to score runs early,” Southwestern coach Jim Woodall said. “Somerset has won a lot of ball games this year and we wanted to put some pressure on them early and we were able to do that today. It was one of those games that went according to plan, but they don’t always work out that way.”
After a game-winning hit on her Senior Night on Monday, Hranicky followed up with a 3-for-3, two RBI hitting performance against cross-town rivals Somerset. Hranicky nailed a double off the fence and a triple in the left field corner.
The Lady Warriors scored single runs in the first and second innings before they exploded for three runs in the fourth inning.
In the first inning, Kosmecki sent a sharp grounder base hit up the middle to score Hranicky from third.
In the second inning, Hranicky hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Lindsey Halcomb from third base.
Then in the fourth inning the Lady Warriors collected four hits and scored three runs to put the game on ice. Malicoat singled to centerfield to score Micah Tarter. Hranicky tripled off a line shot that got past the Lady Jumper left fielder to drive home Malicoat. Fowler hit a bloop single into shallow left field to bring home Hranicky for her second run of the game.
Somerset got their lone run in the seventh inning off Southwestern relief pitcher Hranicky. Emily Ousley drew a walk, advanced to second on a Bethany Edwards bunt single and stole third base. Ally Childers hit an RBI bunt out to score Ousley from third.
“We played against Shelby (Kosmecki) in an exhibition game earlier this spring and we got the bat on the ball a few times,” Somerset coach David Dorsey said. “We know she is going to throw it hard. She is not going to outsmart you, she will just throw it by you. If you lay off her high pitches you can make her throw it enough you can hit her, but we weren’t able to lay off the high pitches and she threw it by us.”
Southwestern, also won the second game 4-1 by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Southwestern (24-9) will travel to Green County on Friday, May 16 for their final regular season game of the season. Somerset (19-12) will travel to Barren County on Saturday, May 17 for two daytime games to wrap up their regular season.
