Cecil Rufus Thompson, 85, of Bronston, Ky., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
Mr. Thompson was born in Quinton, Ky., on Dec. 11, 1922, and was the sixth son of Walter and Lula Roberts Thompson.
He was married to Geneva Coffey Thompson in Albany, Ky., on Oct. 29, 1949. Geneva preceded him in death on Oct. 22, 1993.
He is survived by four children, Margie (and Wendell) Vaughn, Indianapolis, Ind., Lin (and David) Garretson, Seattle, Wash., Cecil Jr. “Bud” (and Patricia) Thompson, Corydon, Ind., and Randy (and Rhonda) Thompson, Bronston; five grandchildren, Kimberly (and Mark) Hanshew, Kevin (and Karla) Vaughn, Jason (and April) Thompson, Travis (and Monica) Thompson, and Dustin (and Ashley) Thompson; seven great grandchildren, Andrew Hanshew, Luke and Logan Vaughn, Lauren and Logan Thompson, and Hanna and Olivia Thompson; five sister-in-laws, Anna Grace, Katherine, Mary Nell and Ruth Ann Thompson, and Dorothy Coffey; a special friend, Viola Nicholas; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his wife; parents; and brothers, Leslie, James, Elza, Charlie, Harvey, Lloyd, Dexter, and Cressel Thompson.
As a young man, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. During the years of raising a family, he resided in Indianapolis, Ind., from 1956 to 1971. There, he was a machinist at the Beuhler Corp. He later retired from Tecumseh in Somerset, Ky., where he worked many years as a supervisor. He was of the Methodist faith.
The family would like to thank Mary Perdue for her special care, and also the ladies of Lifeline, who together enabled him to live at home until the past few weeks, which were spent at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Memory Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Bro. James Allen and Bro. Bud Thompson officiating.
Interment will follow in Quinton Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post no. 38 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Quinton Cemetery Fund, c/o Polly Gibson.
