Gambling or charity?

Dear Editor:
On April 8, 2008, a local high school football booster club held a poker tournament with proceeds going to the football team.
I heard about this on a local radio station.
The person stated that it wasn’t gambling; it was for charity. He also told that the buy-in was $50, and the first prize was $4,000.
Sounds like gambling to me.
I called the athletic director of that school and also a board member; both of them said it was legal and the club had a permit.
I was told that the school was not involved as it was the booster club sponsoring the event.
The proceeds goes to the ball team, which is a part of the school, so maybe the school should get involved.
This is my opinion – everybody has one.
