Workers should be protected from smoke

Dear Editor:

There are laws on the books protecting workers from exposure to everything from asbestos to radiation to chemicals. Across the country, more and more communities are adding protections from secondhand smoke exposure.

Here are a couple of facts to consider: Workers exposed to secondhand smoke are one-third more likely to develop lung cancer than those who work in smoke-free environments. These employees are also more likely to miss work due to illness, often resulting in loss of revenue for the business and increased medical expenses for the employer.

Secondhand smoke is a proven toxin!

Why should workers have to be exposed to it?

Think about it. Not only would the health of workers be protected by smoke-free workplace policies, but their employers would benefit from an improved bottom line.

Everyone in Pulaski County would benefit from a smoke-free workplace policy.
