Local media needs better sports coverage

Readers Views

Commonwealth Journal

This letter is concerning sports coverage in our local county.

First – why can’t our local radio stations tell us when there are ballgames going to be played and what the scores of these games are. The only thing they report on is National League games and games of teams a lot of us as public could care less about. Let’s support our local schools. We have 3 schools who have games everyday; Somerset, Pulaski and Southwestern. Get behind them!

Second – our local newspaper, Why do they not keep up with past athletes? At least when Doug Eads was a sports reporter, he did report on present and past athletes. We have past players that have done very well. For example, Southwestern’s Arby Jones played football at Wake Forest and his senior year was on ESPN in a bowl game and was even drafted to the NFL. Was that in our local newspaper? No. Josh Minton is playing for UK football and is doing quite well. Tyler Sexton also plays for UK. We have numerous kids playing basketball at different colleges and also baseball and football. To name a few Jasie Flynn has a great year at Transy playing basketball, Ryan Smart plays football at Morehead, Cody Gibson plays football at Georgetown, Mike Lewis plays football at Cumberland. These were Southwestern stand outs. I know more about who went where because my son is a graduate of Southwestern. I would like to keep up with all our past kids playing sports at different colleges. The kids that went to all 3 schools. It would not take much to get this information. Instead we have to read about sports about people no one know and from places that most don’t care about. Support your local schools and their sports. Keep up with past players!

Thank you,

Joni Gibson
