Former Wal-Mart manager recalls time in Somerset fondly

Commonwealth Journal

Dear Editor,

I recently left my position as store manager of the Somerset Wal-Mart to pursue an opportunity at the Wal-Mart Regional Office just outside Indianapolis, IN. While this was a good career move for me, the thought of leaving Somerset was something that made the decision a very difficult one. I left with the support and best wishes of the associates of the local store as well as members of the community. The next several weeks were eye-opening for me. The work was new and interesting, the people were nice and I was exposed to many different experiences. But something just didn’t feel right.

Throughout my career with Wal-Mart, my family and I have moved numerous times without a second thought. This time, though, there was a different feeling. Never before have we felt so grounded, so at home, so much a part of a community. Never before have our kids been so happy. Never before have we had such great friends, a welcoming church home, better schools or jobs. It took time away for me to realize this. I was very torn as I returned home the weekend of April 19th to attend the opening of the new baseball facility on North Hwy 27. As I watched my son out on the field and talked to numerous friends in the crowd, I realized that I couldn’t take my family away from what has become our home. After discussing my concerns with my wife Anne, we made what we feel is the best decision we have ever made. I am happy to say that with the support of my Wal-Mart family I will be returning as manager of the Somerset Wal-Mart and to the community that my family and I love.

Often I have heard Somerset being criticized for different reasons. As someone who has lived in several different areas of the southeast United States, I know that what Somerset provides is hard to find….an excellent place to work, live and play. I believe that what makes Somerset so great is simple….its people. People who truly care about others and their community. I am grateful to the people of Somerset for being so good to me and my family for the past five years. We look forward to the years to come. It’s great to be home.

Sincerely,

Allen Adcock
