YMCA would be valuable acquisition

Dear Editor:

I encourage Somerset City and Pulaski County governments to seize the opportunity to acquire the property currently owned by the YMCA. I understand that this property is worth more than $7 million, and it will be a valuable acquisition for the citizens of Pulaski County.

The mayor of Somerset has stated that the property can be acquired without raising taxes.

For several years I was a regular on the walking track at Rocky Hollow Park, which stands as an excellent example of what local government can do in providing exercise opportunities for its citizens. Two years ago I developed a problem with my hip that prevented me from walking long distances. It was then that I discovered the wonderful indoor pools at the YMCA, and I have been a regular there since that time.

The two indoor pools at the Y are the only public pools of their kind for miles around. They provide excellent exercise and rehabilitation opportunities for those of us who are unable to walk or jog. They also provide hours of fun for youth and adults.

Four high school swim teams (Pulaski, Somerset, Southwestern and Russell) currently use the pools.)

The Y also has a gymnasium, a workout area and offers classes in yoga, pilates and others too numerous to mention. Membership at the Y is open to anyone and the membership fee can be adjusted based on family income. Currently 7,000-10,000 people make use of the Y facilities every year.

The Pulaski Fiscal Court, the county-judge executive, Somerset City Council and the mayor have my support in acquiring the YMCA property.

I hope that public ownership will mean that even more citizens will take advantage of this fine facility.
