On the Road to Recovery

letters to the editor

By Mike Coppersmith, Nancy, Ky
Commonwealth Journal

My name is Mike Coppersmith, and I give thanks to God to be serving as the pastor at Sardis Chapel United Methodist Church in Nancy, Kentucky.

It is due to many of the resent current events which have inspired me to write to you this day. It is so often when life situations go wrong or not as planed that something inside us what’s to shout it out, complain, get a hold of someone in charged, or even write to the local newspaper editor and give them a piece of our mind.

As a pastor I often use current events as I preach God’s word, and I can be quoted as saying when something good happens that you won’t read of that in the local paper. Well, as I was driving home today from spending one day at the University of Tennessee Hospital, and two days at the University of Kentucky Hospital, I realized the reason these good events are not in the local paper is because they are not submitted. So here it is.

Our church is seeing great things done for the Kingdom of God. It was recently that I have baptized eight new professing Christians, and during our VBS we had Ten saved, and out of our VBS we started picking up some new families for worship on Sunday mornings.

One of those is a wonderful boy who is nine years old named Matthew Burton. Last Sunday after church my wife Sharon and I had the youth over to our house for a cookout and games, and then went to Sunrise Nursing Home for our adopt a Grandparent Ministry, and I had no idea that two days later I would get a call that Matthew was run over by a cement truck.

I was in Knoxville, Tennessee visiting at the Hospital when I received the call, and headed right away to UK Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. As I was driving to Lexington, not knowing anything about Matthew’s condition I called all the prayer warriors I know, and we prayed as I drove. I told my prayer partner that even though we are living in an imperfect world God is still good.

When I arrived and entered the emergency room I saw Matthew’s mother, and I was so touched as she said, “Wow! Matthew has been asking for you, and here you are,” as she cried, and shared what had happened.

Matthew was such a blessing as I walked into his room in the ER, and he raised his hands to hug me, and asked me to pray because they were talking about amputating his foot. So we prayed and asked God to heal his foot so he could keep it and that Matthew would be back home soon. Matthew had all around him his family, and he was surrounded by love.

I told the family it was a miracle from heaven that Matthew is still alive after being run over by a truck where the tire was bigger then he was. It was early in the morning that the good news came, and we learned that they were going to be able to save is foot, and were able to reset his bones through the area of the compound fracture.

Matthew said, “God answered our prayer.”

Yes He did, and 27 hours after being airlifted to UK, Matthew was walked through the door of his home, and will be sleeping in his own bed. Wow!

There are times where our faith seems to be weak and we wonder if God hears us when we pray. Well, know that He does, hear the Good News, God is good, He hears you, and He loves you.

Psalm 91:11: “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy way.”.

In The Great Commission,

Pastor Mike Coppersmith
