Politics or Justice?
letters to the editor
Commonwealth Journal
Dear Editor:
Last month, the Commonwealth Journal article about the “attack” by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington on the Lake Cumberland Regional Airport brought into focus, for me, the fundamental problem of our country. The recent article on the Center for Public Integrity targeting Hal Rogers’ earmarks was just a confirmation. We are a self-serving people, and we will continue to elect politicians who do the most for us.
It is symptomatic and informative that we have Murtha airport (Pennsylvania) and “Rogers” airport, with funding engineered by a Democrat and a Republican. These are very successful politicians, very good at what they do, and party doesn’t matter. This type of project is seen as a blessing locally, and known as pork everywhere else. Of course, the representatives defend their actions: “their responsibility to bring federal dollars to their district”.
Indeed, they are just doing their job; we, the people, are at fault. We continue to re-elect officials who are best at bringing home the bacon. If they bring benefit to us, we can be bought. They in turn can keep their job with all its benefits. As time goes on, it becomes more apparent that politics and justice are mutually exclusive.
If we were just and truthful, we would rid ourselves of ALL politicians in the next election. In their place, we would elect individuals who serve to do what is right – for all, not just us, and then go home. They would not be beholden to lobbyists, wealthy locals, or a lifetime job in politics.
We, the people, must decide if we want politics or justice.
