Finally, Congress and the administration have agreed on a compromise to save our credit rating from being downgraded for the first time in history, but wait ... it happened anyway and now we find the S&P is being investigated.
Something doesn’t smell right.
Congress could not agree on much of anything so a “super-committee” is going to be appointed to settle what the ones given the job by our Constitution could not do.
Did they choose the people who best understand our budget and our problems?
I don’t think so.
Why do they wait for a crisis to act and only half do what needs to be done?
The solution is not going to be palatable to any of us and it’s going to taking people of courage and integrity to turn us in the right direction: people who are willing to put the hard work into finding solutions. We are facing a deadline again and where are our congressmen and president?
They are on vacation!
The president and his wife took separate planes to their high-class destination, costing taxpayers double for their transportation and all the extra entourage required.
How does that look to the ones of us who live on a fixed income or have no income because of unemployment?
While we’re trying to decide what else we can cut to make ends meet, a vacation is the last thing on our to-do list.
It just tells us our president just doesn’t get it.
One of the problems with our debt crisis is the entitlements. We know this. Social Security and Medicare are what we are raising grandchildren with. My husband and I have paid into Social Security since we were 17. We depend on it but we know something needs to be done.
We also have a huge problem with SSI, a good program for those truly disabled but it has been greatly misused. I know whole families on SSI and they seem to be able to do anything they want to do except work for a living.
When we provide a bare subsistence we condemn them to a life of poverty and many times, generational poverty.
When the U.S.A. was young, she welcomed legal immigrants. My own ancestors came from England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy and Germany and some were already here to greet them. There’s no evidence any of them were given anything except the opportunity to work hard and earn a living in the land of opportunity.
Everyone in the family worked hard just to survive but families were stronger and our nation was safer and even though there was little money, they felt rich to have the opportunity to live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”
We, in America, need to work on being content with what we have and look for ways to make a difference in our communities and we need to hold our elected officials accountable for the job they do.
