CJ will exchange worn U.S. flags

Local News

CJ Staff Report
Commonwealth Journal

The Commonwealth Journal currently has a limited number of 3' x 5' U.S. Flags available to the public. These flags are suitable for display indoors or out and will be exchanged for free while supplies last. The only requirement is that you bring in a frayed, worn or faded U.S. Flag, 3' x 5' or larger, for exchange.

The U.S. Flag code states that when a flag is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Locally, two groups collect and properly dispose of flags with ceremony and dignity. You may drop flags off at the American Legion Post no. 38 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, or at VFW Post 269 between noon & 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Or if you would like to receive a new flag in return you may drop your old flags off at our offices at 110 East Mt. Vernon St., Somerset, and we will take the flags to one of the above named organizations for proper disposal.

If the flag you are turning in has a particular meaning to you, please feel free to tuck a note to that effect into the flag as you bring it to our offices. We will attempt to honor your sentiment in an appropriate manner.

Any such submissions become the property of the Commonwealth Journal and may be used in print if the paper decides to do so.
