Three injured in three-vehicle wreck on U.S. 27

Local News

Three people were transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Tuesday afternoon after sustaining injuries in a three-vehicle accident that happened on U.S. 27 at the intersection of Tradepark Drive.

According to a report from the Somerset Police Department, Verna Shinkle, 74, of Ohio, operating a 2002 Ford Taurus reportedly was traveling northbound on U.S. 27 when she was struck in the right side by a 2006 Cadillac operated by Richard Carpenter, 77, of 1119 Kendras Way, Somerset.

The collision forced both vehicles into the path of a Suburban that was waiting to turn right at the intersection onto U.S. 27 from the entrance to O’Reilly’s Auto Parts.

According to the report, Carpenter said he was crossing U.S. 27 eastbound off of Tradepark Drive and that he “made it almost three-fourths of the way across the highway when he was suddenly struck by another vehicle.”

According to witnesses at the scene, Shinkle failed to stop for the red light at the intersection.

Shinkle, Carpenter and his passenger, Claire Carpenter, 76, of 1119 Kendras Way, Somerset, were transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital for treatment of their injuries, where they were treated and released.

The driver of the Suburban, Brian Sewell, 32, of 955 E. Todd Road, Science Hill, was not injured in the accident.

The Somerset Police Department was assisted on the scene by Somerset Fire/EMS and the Pulaski County Rescue Squad.
