153 students receive ‘Work Ethic’ seal

— “You are our future. Without you we won’t be able to grow.”
Those were the words of Mayor Eddie Girdler to the 153 students, who were recipients of the work ethic seal, a prestigious award high school juniors and seniors can receive.
Girdler said those who look to bring their industry into the Somerset-Pulaski County area want to know about the workforce in the area and through this program officials can show those who are interested a little more knowledge of what type of workforce there is.
“They (industry) do not look to the past,” said Girdler. “They look to the future.”
Some of the criteria the students had to meet included maintaining an excellent attendance record, at least a 2.5 grade point average, and a record free of disciplinary referrals, as well as involvement in at least two extracurricular activities, part-time employment or community service.
The students had to have a 94 percent or greater daily attendance, even with excused absences. This is because jobs require good attendance, whether absences are excused or unexcused.
“I feel the work ethic seal will give you a winning edge,” said Shirlene Taylor, business liaison for Cumberlands Workforce Network.
Each year the number of students who have received the work ethic seal award has grown, since it began in May 2005 by the Pulaski County Educational Consortium. In 2005, 29 students received the award; in 2006, 76 students received the award; and then in 2007, 120 students received the award.
The banquet was hosted by the Somerset-Pulaski County Development Foundation.
