Theft rash nets 15 indictments

Burglaries took place across county in February

By HEATHER PYLES, CJ Staff Writer
Commonwealth Journal

A three-month investigation by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigation Division into a rash of burglaries at residences in the county resulted in the indictment of 15 people on more than 100 counts of burglary and theft-related charges.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, numerous reports of residential burglaries were made in February 2008 in communities across the county.

Areas affected include Limestone Street, Raney Road, Grundy Road, Maes Court, Breezy Hills Drive, Ky. 761, Kayla Road, Ky. 1248, Lakeview Drive and Old Ky. 90 Loop 2. Items such as guns, jewelry, computers, televisions, collector’s knives, tools were reported stolen, along with other household items.

Several suspects involved in the break-ins were identified during the investigation undertaken by Detective Bobby Jones and Detective John Hutchinson, and other suspects connected with buying and selling the stolen property were also identified.

“This investigation was the result of the diligent work of these detectives who were following leads provided from the public,” Lt. Brett Whitaker said. “The detectives’ tireless efforts were rewarded in this multi-count indictment handed down by the Pulaski County Grand Jury.”

The following people were indicted last week by a grand jury in connection with the case:

• Joshua Bolin, 20, of 100 Circle Drive, Burnside, indicted on five counts of first-degree burglary, six counts of second-degree burglary, 10 counts of theft by unlawful taking over $300, five counts of theft by unlawful taking of a firearm, receiving stolen property more than $300 and theft by unlawful taking less than $300.

• Clifford Jones, 79, of 1799 Coomer Road, Burnside, indicted on receiving stolen property over $300.

• Rodney Eric Stevens, 25, of 20 Bray Lane, Tateville, indicted on two counts of receiving stolen property over $300.

• Kathy Bolin, 44, of 1679 Clifty Road, Somerset, indicted on two counts of receiving stolen property over $300 and four counts of receiving stolen property less than $300.

Vernon Street, Somerset, indicted on first-degree complicity to burglary, second-degree complicity to burglary, complicity to theft by unlawfully taking more than $300, complicity to theft by unlawful taking of a firearm, receiving stolen property over $300 and receiving stolen property less than $300.

• Waylon Burton, 26, of 517 North College Street, Somerset, indicted on receiving stolen property over $300.

• Bige Baker, 35, of 226 Cordell Drive, Burnside, indicted on receiving stolen property over $300.

• Leslie Baker, 31, of 226 Cordell Drive, Burnside, indicted on receiving stolen property over $300.

Whitaker said not all of the suspects have been arrested yet.

Most of the stolen property, valued at more than $45,000, was recovered and returned to the owners.

Pulaski County Sheriff Todd Wood said tips given to authorities by citizens led to the arrests and indictments.

“The tips provided to the detectives were vital in identifying these suspects,” Wood said in the release. “We encourage the public to call us with any information they have about crimes occurring on our communities.”

Whitaker agreed that the public’s tips were tantamount in helping the investigation into the burglaries move forward.

“The kind of tips given to us were that someone saw somebody talking about it (the burglaries) or that someone saw somebody with something that looked suspicious,” Whitaker said.

The Somerset Police Department assisted the sheriff’s department in the investigation, which is still ongoing. Additional evidence will be presented to a grand jury in the future that may result in additional charges.
