Woman involved in weekend wreck in fair shape at UK

By HEATHER PYLES, CJ Staff Writer
Commonwealth Journal

One woman remains in the hospital in Lexington after a weekend accident involving a vehicle and a motorcycle left two people injured.

Susan Carrender, the passenger on the motorcycle, was listed in fair condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center Monday afternoon. Carrender and the driver of the motorcycle, Gary Hunter, were injured when they collided with a 2007 Suzuki Aerio driven by Megan Dunham right before midnight Friday.

According to the Burnside Police Department, Dunham, who works as a manager at the restaurant, was pulling out from Reno’s onto U.S. 27 to make a U-turn when the collision happened. Burnside Police Officer Jeff Casada said the investigation into how the collision occurred was still continuing.

Traffic on U.S. 27 was rerouted for approximately 30 minutes when authorities shut down U.S 27 to land a helicopter to fly Carrender to the UK Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Casada said Carrender and Hunter both complained of pain on their lower bodies after the accident.

“That’s where most of their pain was coming from,” Casada said.

Casada said it didn’t appear Carrender or Hunter were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.

Hunter was transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital Friday, where he was later released.

Dunham was not injured, according to Casada.

Casada commended Burnside Fire Chief Eric Henderson for guiding the helicopter to U.S. 27 among closely spaced buildings and numerous power lines.

“He (Henderson) did a good job of making a landing zone for the copter,” Casada said.

The Burnside Police Department was assisted on the scene by the Burnside Fire Department, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, Somerset-Pulaski County EMS and Constable Mike Wallace.
