Irvin, Ky., man gets 5 years for trafficking

Local News

An Irvin, Ky., man pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in Pulaski Circuit Court Thursday and was sentenced to five years imprisonment, according to Pulaski County Commonwealth’s Attorney Eddy F. Montgomery’s office.

James R. Adams, 40, was charged with first degree trafficking in a controlled substance in connection with an August 2007 incident during which a Dayton, Ohio, woman known as “Granny” was also arrested.

UNITE Prosecutor David L. Dalton said that Adams, going by the name “Jimmy,” approached a female employee at the Goodie Shack in Burnside last summer, asking her if she wanted to buy some pills from him. Jimmy — later identified as James Adams — left his phone number with the employee.

The owner of the Goodie Shack later contacted the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department to alert them to the situation.

On Aug. 1, 2007, sheriff’s investigators arranged a sale of pills with Adams in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Somerset. Adams and a female known as “Granny” — 67-year-old Phyllis Goodwin — arrived at the parking lot, and Adams sold 39 methadone pills to the undercover officer there.

Adams and Goodwin were both arrested on the scene.

Goodwin pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges earlier this month. Prosecutors are anticipating she will receive a five-year prison sentence.

Adams pleaded guilty to his trafficking charge before Pulaski Circuit Judge David A. Tapp Thursday. He waived his right to a separate sentencing hearing and was sentenced to five years in prison by Tapp.

Adams is already serving a jail sentence for drug charges incurred in Estill County, Dalton said. His five-year sentence will run consecutive to his current term.
