Local man attacked with sledgehammer

Somerset — A Somerset man is recuperating at the University of Kentucky Medical Center from injuries he sustained when he was attacked with a sledgehammer.

Emergency responders originally believed they were responding to a report of a construction accident at a Bronston residence last Thursday afternoon. However, Kentucky State Police investigators soon learned that 42-year-old Ernie Wood was the victim of an assault.

KSP Detective Doug Boyd said an argument occurred between Wood and his employee, Kenneth Gill, 28, of Tateville. Gill struck Wood in the head with a sledgehammer.

Wood was airlifted from the scene of the incident to the UK Medical Center in Lexington.

A UK spokeswoman said Wood was in fair condition last night.

Gill was arrested and charged with first-degree assault on Monday. He was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center, and was being held on a $15,000 cash bond.

Boyd is being assisted in the investigation by KSP Trooper Parrish Baker, Trooper Sean Dixon, and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Detective Scott Trotter.
