Three Somerset residents had to be transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital following an injury accident at light #2 on North U.S. 27 yesterday.
According to a report by the Somerset Police Department, officers were notified of the two-vehicle accident at 11:26 a.m.
Upon investigation, they found a 1996 Dodge Dakota, driven by Vona B. Stewart, 69, Stewart Road, Somerset, was stopped at light #2 facing north on U.S. 27 in the left turning lane, while a 2007 Nissan Sentra, driven by Lesley Matlock, Lowery Lane, Somerset, was south bound on U.S. 27 in the far right lane and was stopped at light #2 facing north on U.S. 27 in the left turning lane.
Stewart proceeded to make a left hand turn onto Turner Street, but failed to yield the right-of-way to Matlock, who was traveling through the intersection.
Stewart’s vehicle struck the Sentra on the right side and spun it into the median.
The report said Stewart was stopped at light #2 waiting to make a left turn onto Turner Street, and the two lights for northbound traffic were green and she was confused, thinking she had the green light to turn left.
Meanwhile, Matlock told officers she was traveling southbound on U.S. 27 approaching the intersection of Turner Street when she realized the Dodge Dakota was crossing into her path. At that time, she swerved to the right, pushing her brakes, however, the Dakota hit her in the driver’s side, spinning her into the median.
Matlock, along with Amber R. Matlock, 14, and Keshia F. Matlock, 13, both of Lowery Lane, Somerset, who were both passengers in the Sentra, were transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Another passenger in the Sentra, Terry Matlock, 35, Lowery Lane, Somerset, refused EMS treatment.
Stewart refused EMS treatment, and a passenger in her vehicle, Robert Stewart, Stewart Road, was not taken to the hospital.
Everyone in the two vehicles except Keshia Matlock was wearing seat belts.
Susan Ramsey Wilson, community relations director at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, said all three patients were treated in the emergency room at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, but were not admitted.
Assisting at the scene was the Somerset Fire/EMS.
