The London-Laurel County Chamber of Commerce welcomed U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao to London on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008.
Secretary Chao was the keynote speaker for the First Annual “Women in Business” Celebration. The event began at 6:30 p.m. at the London Community Center.
The chamber is honoring the success of local women who have striven to climb the ladders of the business world.
The theme of the night is “Be Healthy, Be Wealthy, Be Wise.”
One amazing Laurel County woman, who has lived those words for decades, will receive a special award for her unique accomplishments. The surprise recipient will be announced at the celebration.
Secretary Elaine Chao is the nation’s 24th Secretary of Labor and the first Asian American woman appointed to a President’s cabinet in U.S. history.
Arriving at the age of 8 from Asia speaking no English, Secretary Chao’s experience transitioning to a new country inspired her to dedicate most of her professional life to ensuring that workers have access to opportunity and the chance to build better lives.
The chamber is pleased to have had Secretary Chao share her words of inspiration and success with local women and men.
