Domestic dispute turns dangerous for deputy, dog

By CHRIS HARRIS, CJ Staff Writer
Commonwealth Journal

While responding to a domestic altercation, a Pulaski County sheriff’s deputy had to put down an attacking dog Thursday night.

Charles J. Wilson, 40, of 296 Hall Ridge Road in Somerset, was arrested following the incident, and charges with fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) and three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.

Shortly before 10 p.m., sheriff’s units responded to a report of a domestic in progress where gunshots had been allegedly fired at Wilson’s address.

Upon arrival by Sgt. Jon Williams and deputies Travis Thompson, Adam Childress, and McKenzie Benkner, it was discovered that Wilson had assaulted his girlfriend and fired two shots at another male subject inside the residence, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

The investigation also revealed that Wilson had allegedly pointed the firearm at his girlfriend and her mother during the incident, along with the male at whom the aforementioned shots were fired.

Wilson had fled from the house into a barn on the property before the arrival of the deputies. Deputy Thompson deployed his canine unit, Tommy, in a search for the suspect. Along with the other deputies, Deputy Thompson and Tommy located and confronted Wilson inside the barn.

During the attempt to apprehend Wilson, a large Rottweiler entered the barn to attack Deputy Thompson and the law enforcement canine. After the Rottweiler would not disengage from the attack, Deputy Thompson took action to protect himself and his canine from serious injury by shooting the attacking animal, resulting in its death.

Wilson was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.
