TOUR SEKY hosts successful tourism event

Community News

Commonwealth Journal

The eight annual TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky Caucus was held Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset.

TOUR orchestrated an enlightening and motivating day for tourism professionals, business leaders, elected officials and volunteers.

This year’s theme was “Don’t Let Tourism Puzzle You.”

Highlights of the day included keynote speaker Congressman Hal Rogers and his outlook for tourism in 2009.

During the “Puzzling Lunch” The APEX (Achievement Professionalism Excellence Xtraordinary) award for tourism excellence was awarded to Cliff and Sherry Cantrell from Wolfe County; along with the “Shining STAR” Customer Service Trainer of the Year, awarded to Sharae Myers of Corbin, and “The Hal Rogers Governmental Tourism Impact Award” was given to Mayor David Thompson of Barbourville.

The program was unbeatable this year with a number of impressive speakers. Secretary Marcheta Sparrow of The Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet; George Duvall, national motivational speaker, trainer and comedian; Berkeley Young, Young Strategies; and Debbie Geiger, Geiger & Associates Inc.

TOUR SEKY would like to give special thanks to all of the sponsors and Dr. Tricia Day’s students from Lindsey Wilson College for all of their support to help make this a great event.

TOUR SEKY is an initiative of Congressman Hal Rogers. The organization’s mission is to promote, develop and expand the existing and potential tourism industry throughout southern and eastern Kentucky in an effort to contribute to the economic and cultural growth of the region.
