Couple killed in Danville shooting to be laid to rest in Somerset

Somerset — As police continue to follow tips into the brutal triple murder that took place last week in Danville, two of the three victims are slated to be laid to rest here in Somerset.

Michael Hockensmith, 35, and Angela Hockensmith, 38, both currently of Lincoln County but formerly of Somerset, were shot to death in their Danville store, ABC Gold, Games and More pawnshop, early Friday morning.

A third victim, a customer identified as Daniel Smith, 60, of Richmond, was killed as well.

Danville Police Chief Tony Gray said the victims were discovered Friday after a nine-year-old child called 911 after the shootings. The nine-year-old and an 18-month-old — the Hockensmiths’ children — were in the store at the time of the shootings, though neither was harmed.

According to the Danville Advocate-Messenger, sources close to the family said that the children have been placed with grandparents in Somerset.

The morning shootings prompted officials to put local schools and nearby Centre College on lockdown and urge residents to stay away from downtown.

A suspect has not yet been arrested in the triple murder, but police are following up on a number of tips. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible, according to Gray.

Police say the suspect is thought to be a heavyset white man, 40 to 50 years old, with a pot belly. He was wearing a green camouflage jacket around the time the shooting occurred on Friday.

Steve Divine, who co-owned the business with Michael Hockensmith, told the Danville Advocate-Messenger that the store had cameras, but a previous owner had taken the video recording equipment when he left the business.

Divine also told the newspaper that Smith was a gold buyer and seller who may have carried lots of money, and he came in the shop at the same time every Friday. Divine told The Advocate-Messenger that he thinks Smith might have been the target of the robbery.

In addition to his work at the shop, Michael Hockensmith served as youth minister at Mitchellsburg Baptist Church in Danville. Angela Hockensmith was a stay-at-home mom who home-schooled the children and reportedly helped at the pawn shop at times.

Angela Hockensmith was a 1993 graduate of Somerset High School. Although Michael Hockensmith didn’t hail from the Somerset area — he graduated from Georgetown High School in 1996 — he has ties to the area as well.

The two attended Ferguson Baptist Church, where Michael Hockensmith surrendered to Christian ministry, according to the couple’s obituary, which can be found elsewhere in this edition. Angela Hockensmith also sang with the Somerset Community College Choir as well, according to their obituary.

Visitation for Mike and Angela Hockensmith will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 after 4 p.m. at Southern Oaks Funeral Home in Somerset.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Roger Dykes, Bro. Brett Brinson and Bro. Jason Moore officiating.

Burial will be in the Southern Oaks Cemetery.
