Retired KSP Commander Greg Speck will oppose Sheriff Wood

Veteran lawmen to face off in 2014

Somerset —

A retired commander of Kentucky State Police Post 15 at Columbia will be a candidate for sheriff in Pulaski County during the 2014 election cycle.
Greg Speck said he has filed a Letter of Intent with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance that allows him to raise money and campaign for the office prior to November 6, the official beginning of the filing period of next year’s elections.
“I’m passing out (campaign) cards,” Speck laughed.
Speck was promoted to captain and named commander at the Columbia Post in 2005. He spent a total of 27 years with state police, 20 years as a sworn officer and seven years as a civilian employee. He served as a state trooper in Pulaski County during the early 1990s.
Other assignments during his career include commander of the KSP Intelligence Section in Frankfort and working with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force. Speck also worked in the KSP Driver Testing Branch and at the Bowling Green, Harlan, London and Henderson posts.
Speck’s wife, Dana, is a speech therapist at the Science Hill Independent School District and in private practice. The Specks have lived in Pulaski County more than 20 years.
A Republican, Speck will face incumbent Sheriff Todd Wood in the GOP primary May 20, 2014. Wood, now serving the latter part of his third term, said he definitely will be a candidate for reelection.
Wood was elected sheriff during the election cycle following the April 13, 2002, assassination of Sheriff Sam Catron. Retired KSP detective Jim McWhorter was appointed sheriff a few hours after Catron was killed. He served until Wood was elected.
