Market on Main ready to greet new season

This Thursday, things are about to get a whole lot more delicious in downtown Somerset. That’s because this week marks the return of Market on Main, the outdoor farmer’s market that proved a hit with both the health-conscious and merely hungry alike last year.
“Everywhere I go, people are really excited and ask when we’re going to be back out,” said Jamie Aramini, the market’s organizer. “I think we’re going to grow this year. There’s still a lit of people who didn’t know about us last year, so the more we get the word out, hopefully it will be a better time for everybody.”
Held on the plaza of the downtown Pulaski County judicial center, Market on Main will take place on every Thursday from June through September from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Organizers also held a “Winter Market” during the colder months but took a little time off to gear up for the outdoor affair, which is expected to host approximately 25 vendors this first time out.
“There will probably be more as the season goes on,” said Aramini. “It’s a lot more than we started with last year.
“We were definitely ready to get back outside and get in the sunshine and get back to summer food,” she added, regarding to switchover from Winter Market events, which were held in the Carnegie Community Arts Center on the other side of Fountain Square.
Everything at the market is “producer only” — meaning it has to be handmade by the person selling it, whether it’s an item of food or something to wear. 
Aramini said that while there will be some new vendors this year, it will largely be the same Market on main people came to know and love in the summer of 2013.
Starting at 6 p.m., the market will feature musical entertainment. This Thursday, Kevin Dalton and Tommy Minton are scheduled to perform. There will also be free yoga instruction at 5 p.m. thanks to Nourish Yoga Community of Somerset available at the event.
Among the items typically available from producers around the region are meat products, fruits and vegetables, breads and pastries, clothing and crafts, and much more.
Aramini was pleased to see an initially unfamiliar public — “People were skeptical,” she noted of last year’s earliest events — turn in favor of what Market on Main is doing and is eager to see what this summer will bring, as the market becomes more of a community onto itself.
“I think interest has definitely grown,” said Aramini, who also organized the Kentucky Green Living Fair earlier this year. “I think people are excited to connect with other people. Market on Main gave people the opportunity to do that. You come and meet the people growing the food to feed your family.
“The market is about local food and supporting small businesses,” she added, “but it’s just an enjoyable time and I think people are getting excited about that.”
