Ohio man arrested on child abuse charge

Somerset — An Ohio man was arrested last weekend after police say he physically abused a young child while on a camping trip in the Lake Cumberland area.

According to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, deputies received a report of possible child abuse and responded to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital at around 11 p.m. Friday. A two-year-old child had been brought in and was being treated for injuries to his head and body.

“Responding deputies found the child had apparently been abused while camping with family at the Pulaski County Park,” stated Lt. Brett Whitaker, with the sheriff’s department.

Detectives with the sheriff’s department’s Criminal Investigation Division learned that several members of the child’s family were at a reunion at the park when the incident happened.

“Detectives interviewed several of the family and learned that the child was being cared for by the child’s mother’s boyfriend,” stated Whitaker in the press release. “During that time, witnesses told investigators they observed him carry the child into a tent where they then heard several slaps and strikes.

“When the child emerged from the tent, the witnesses observed injuries to the child’s face,” Whitaker added.

Whitaker said the child suffered “substantial bruising and redness about the head and face” and he suffered similar injuries to his buttocks as well.

The child was treated and LCRH and released into the custody of family members.

The suspect in the incident, Joel Konrad, 28, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was arrested in the early morning hours of Saturday and charged with first-degree criminal abuse, which is a Class C felony.

Konrad was also charged with alcohol intoxication, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

He was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.

The investigation is continuing by the sheriff’s department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
