Man whose daughter was injured in crash back in jail

Somerset —

Questions over drug test results have landed a local man who is facing charges stemming from a March accident that left him and his daughter injured back in jail.
But an attorney for 56-year-old James F. “Jimmy” Jasper said he’s hopeful it was a technicality that can be resolved.
“Right now we are looking closely at the allegations in the record,” said local attorney Scott Foster. “We hope this is nothing more than an error in the testing process or lab work.
“We hope to have Mr. Jasper reunited with his wife and daughter, who need him, as soon as possible,” added Foster.
Jasper was arrested Thursday and was being held without bond in the Pulaski County Detention Center. The arrest came after Jasper allegedly tested positive for a class of drugs called benzodiazepines in three random drug tests.
The report of non-compliance, filed Wednesday, May 22, states that Jasper tested positive for benzodiazepines in drug screenings given on April 12, April 22, and May 8. The pre-trial division had not obtained any information confirming that Jasper had a prescription for benzodiazepines as of the report’s filing.
“Pretrial was advised ... that hospital records were sequestered for the (April 12 and April 22) drug screens and that they believed that he was administered medication in the hospital that would cause him to test positive for benzodiazepines,” stated the report. “However this has not been verified ...”
The report also states the levels of benzodiazepines found in Jasper’s system are going down.
Benzodiazepines are a class of psychoactive drugs used to treat a variety of issues, such as back pain, insomnia and anxiety. Frequently-prescribed benzodiazepines include Klonopin, Xanax, and Valium.
Jasper spent several days at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in March recovering from a number of injuries. He and his daughter, Jaden Jasper, 12, were seriously injured on March 5 after Jimmy Jasper’s vehicle ran off the road on Pumphouse Road and through a wooden fence, which crashed through the interior of the car and struck both Jaden and Jimmy.
