Men who walked away from Pulaski plane crash on the mend

Somerset —

Two men who miraculously walked away from an airplane crash in southern Pulaski County continue to recover from their injuries.
As of Tuesday morning, Gary D. McGlothin, 54, of Lexington, was listed in fair condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
McGlothin was piloting a 1974 Piper Warrior small-engine plane on Monday afternoon when the plane went down near the private Boss Airfield, located off Jacksboro Road in Bronston.
McGlothin’s passenger, Charles A. Jackson, 55, of Winchester, has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Emergency responders were called to the site of the crash, located near Flynn-Colyer Road, at around 4 p.m. Monday. An initial investigation by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department suggested the men were attempting a “soft take-off” from the air strip when it failed to get enough altitude for the take-off. The plane barely cleared nearby trees, and it went down in an adjacent field.
The two men managed to escape the aircraft before the plane’s fuel supply — estimated to be around 40 gallons — caught fire.
Witnesses at the scene stated both men appeared to be suffering from cuts and bruises, and McGlothin was reported to have been suffering from some type of head injury. Jackson reportedly suffered from injuries to his ribs.
McGlothin and Jackson were treated on the scene by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS and airlifted individually by helicopters to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration registry database, the plane appears to be registered to William Knapp Jr., of Dry Ridge in Grant County. McGlothin and Jackson are also listed as co-owners of the plane.
FAA records indicate McGlothin’s pilot certification was up to date.
Lt. Troy McLin, with the sheriff’s department, stated that officials with the FAA completed their investigation on Tuesday.
