Cape Electrical buys Cumberland Electric

Supply house now part of growing Missouri chain

Somerset — Cape Electrical Supply, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, has acquired Cumberland Electric Supply located on Russell Dyche Highway (E. Ky. 80) in Somerset. Cumberland Electric thus becomes the 22nd location for Cape Electric and the company’s sixth store in Kentucky.

In business for nearly 50 years, Cumberland was opened by the late Vance Graybeal in 1962. His daughter, Judi Cappon, has managed the family owned business since the mid 1980’s and served as Cumberland’s President.

“Obviously, we’ve made an important family decision in selling Cumberland Electric, but we’ve also worked hard to bring in a buyer that will continue the longstanding tradition of our local business and support both Cumberland’s customers and employees,” Cappon said.

Cumberland Electric will offer Cape Electrical Supply a broader market presence in eastern Kentucky. The company’s store network now stretches across the southern tier of the state from Paducah in the west, Bowling Green in the central part of the state, and now eastward to Somerset. Cumberland serves a wide range of customers in the surrounding market area.

“We’re very excited to have Cumberland’s long standing business join our growing company,” said Cape Electric President Allen Toole. “The value of independent distribution in communities such as Somerset allows us to leave all the things in place that customers expect, yet add improvements and make investment towards future growth.”

Marty Mize will continue in his role as General Manager of Cumberland, as will long time Sales Manager Glen Wheeler. Toole pointed out a large part of Cumberland’s value is the stability of its sales team and customer base.

Cape Electrical Supply operates locations in Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee. In business since 1953, the company serves customers in electrical construction, industrial, communications, residential, and utility markets.
