Pulaski County horse vying for world title

Somerset —

California Chrome’s race for the Triple Crown may have ended long ago, but Kentuckians can still cheer on a Pulaski County horse vying for a world championship ribbon.
Next week, Nancy based horse-breeder Denny Harbison will take his most successful horse — 3-year-old filly Fellas Showtime Sara — to Tunica, Miss., to defend her World Champion Palomino title.
“Sara” became the Reserve World Champion in the open division and World Champion in the Amateur Division, in the 2013 World Palomino Show. And she is the result of a long, expensive breeding program that has taken Harbison all over the country.
And while she’s only been to show twice, she swept both the amateur and professional palomino world competitions last year. And it was no surprise to Harbison. “I could tell when she hit the ground that she was going to be something special,” he said. But the most special thing about her isn’t her accolades, at least not for Harbison. It’s the redemption she represents.
In 2011, Harbison showed a horse that “would smoke Sara” at the Palomino World Championship, he said.
Her name was Fellas Date Blondes, and Harbison said one of the largest quarter horse halter horse halter breeds in the nation said she was “hands down” the best horse on show that year. “Blondie” was even sired by the prestigious palomino Mr. Yella Fella, who also sired Sara.
But Blondie got nervous at the show and and wouldn’t set up for the judges. The judges docked her points, and she finished third.
In photos taken right after the show, Harbison wears a frown almost as large as his cowboy hat. A dream long held and worked for fell apart at the last minute due to circumstances out of his control.
But Sara turned that around and made him grin when she was Reserve World Champion two years later.
