Counting Crows, strong supporting cast set for MMF

Somerset —

Sure, there may be that featured attraction at this weekend’s Master Musicians Festival that everybody’s talking about.
But there are 12 acts — plus a few more familiar local names to boot — scheduled to play the MMF stage, and only one of them is named Counting Crows.
Starting tonight, and spanning all day Saturday, the 2014 edition of Master Musicians Festival features some up-and-comers, returning favorites, and homegrown talent.
And as MMF board president Tiffany Bourne pointed out, you don’t want to miss any of them because you never know who you might hear.
“I hope people get there early because I don’t want them to miss any band,” she said. “People tend to wait on Saturday night to come out, and I hope people come out early and realize what kind of talent we have.
“We (the board) have been talking about that, how you can totally miss somebody amazing,” continued Bourne. “The Avett Brothers are selling out Rupp Arena and headlining Bonnaroo (the major Tennessee-based music festival). They played at 7 p.m. on Friday night (at MMF in 2008). You don’t know who you could miss.”
Indeed, it’s possible to think of MMF as a launching pad of sorts for talent that’s climbing the music industry ladder.
“It’s the festival you go to before you’re big,” quipped Bourne.
Though that’s not necessarily true all the time — especially as of late. MMF reeled in the biggest fish it’s ever hooked last year with country legend Willie Nelson, and did it again this year with Counting Crows. The alternative rock super-group that rose to prominence in the early ‘90s with hits like “Mr. Jones,” “Hanginaround,” and “Accidentally in Love,” will close out the festival Saturday night. They’re getting ready to release their latest album “Somewhere Under Wonderland” in mid-September, and just released the first single off that record, “Palisades Park,” this past week.
