Wood’s pay raises concern Speck

Several sheriff’s office employees receive promotions, pay increases

Somerset —

Pulaski County Sheriff Todd Wood made a series of promotions this week — all of which carried substantial pay raises.
Wood called the moves “business as usual” and said he was setting up the sheriff’s office command staff for Sheriff-elect Greg Speck.
“We’re getting things in order for when (Speck) comes in,” Wood said. “It’s been one of my goals. We’ve been operating under capacity for some time now and I needed to get things in order.”
Speck defeated Wood in the May Republican primary election.
Wood made the following personnel changes:
• Scott Trotter was promoted to Lt. Detective with an annual pay raise of $3,806.40. Trotter is a 21-year veteran.
• Bart Watkins was promoted to Sgt. Deputy with an annual pay raise of $1,996.80. Watkins is a 20-year veteran.
• Jonathon Williams was promoted to Lt. Deputy with an annual pay raise of $2,496.
• Teresa Brummett was promoted to office manager with an annual pay raise of $3,806.40. This promotion will take effect at the end of the month, according to Wood.
• Brett Whitaker is now lieutenant in charge of public information and IT and got an annual pay raise of $1,497.60.
Wood said another officer will be promoted to road sergeant in the coming weeks.
“That will get us closer to where we have 24/7 supervision,” Wood said.
“We’d been operating far too long understaffed,” Wood continued. “We’ve only had one street lieutenant since we had a retirement last year. We really need two street lieutenants and two road sergeants to be up to full capacity.
“Our county is as busy as any in the Commonwealth,” Wood added. “Now we will have the proper supervision.”
Wood dismissed any notion that the promotions were politically motivated to reward his supporters, drain Speck’s budget and set the incoming sheriff up to have to make tough personnel changes when he takes office.
