Somerset suffers power outage

Denham Street substation source of problem for 500 customers

Somerset —

A number of businesses and homes were left without electricity Wednesday thanks to a mid-afternoon power outage.
Cliff Feltham, with Kentucky Utilities, said a lightning arrester — a protective device that limits surge voltages caused by lightning strikes — went bad and tripped a breaker at the Denham Street substation.
Feltham said the outage affected 321 customers. Many of those customers are located on U.S. 27 and in nearby areas, including the Pulaski County Detention Center, Somerset-Pulaski County EMS, Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and an assortment of other businesses.
Pulaski County Jailer Mike Harris confirmed the detention center lost power, but said there were no negative effects from the outage because the jail operates on a back-up generator in the event of an outage.
The hospital has a back-up generator system that kicks in during outages as well.
An email sent Wednesday afternoon to Susan Ramsey Wilson, director of marketing and community relations at LCRH, asking for conformation that the hospital was affected by the outage, was not returned by press time Wednesday.
Feltham said the outage occurred at around 1:50 p.m. He said a circuit separate from that affected by the initial outage had to be “dropped” for about a minute so workers could get the first circuit back on track.
That affected 181 additional customers for just about a minute or so, until both circuits were turned back on at 2:22 p.m.
