Semi overturns on 914 Bypass

Emergency crews work hours to clean up fuel and other spilled fluids

Somerset —

The driver of an overturned truck on Wednesday escaped unharmed, but the surface of the Ky. 914 bypass was not so fortunate.
Emergency crews worked hours to clean a mixture of fuel and other fluids from the road after a tractor trailer carrying an industrial forklift crashed on the exit ramp onto the Southwest Ky. 914 bypass, headed from the direction of Russell Springs and Bowling Green.
The accident occurred at 2:35 p.m., according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.
The accident is under investigation and the reason why the truck overturned is unknown, although it’s possible that speed could have been a contributing factor.
The driver, Eugene Gregory, 41, driving for the Family Tradition trucking company of Richmond, Ind., was uninjured in the accident.
Doug Baker, chief of the Somerset-Pulaski County Special Response Team, said that about 40 gallons of diesel fuel escaped, along with 10 to 15 gallons of hydraulic fluid and some antifreeze as well.
The spillage could have been worse, but the local HAZMAT team and Somerset Fire Department worked to pump the tanks upon arrival, where they found the active leak, said Baker.
Emergency responders worked to have the road open by around 6 p.m. after it had been blocked to traffic for hours.
