Locals surprised at Science Hill’s mention inTom Cruise film

Somerset —

Science Hill’s recent turn at movie stardom seems to have snuck up on people.
The small northern Pulaski County community of a shade under 700 people (as of the 2010 Census) was referenced in the new sci-fi feature film “Edge of Tomorrow,” currently playing in theaters.
But Bill Dick, mayor of Science Hill, had only vaguely caught wind of the mention.
Management at Somerset Cinemas 8 were busier selling tickets and running projectors than catching sly references tossed off seemingly at random in the film.
But it’s there. And now the whole world knows about Science Hill, Ky.
In the film, which was released in the United States on June 6, veteran character actor Bill Paxton — who previously played infamous Kentuckian Randall McCoy in the 2012 “Hatfields & McCoys” TV mini-series — plays Master Sergeant Farrell Bartolome.
After delivering a line indicative of Kentucky’s seemingly inherent quirkiness — when star Tom Cruise asks if Paxton’s character is from America, the reply is, “No, I’m from Kentucky” — Paxton is asked where he’s from specifically and replies that he’s from Science Hill.
Later, when asked how the town got its unique name, Paxton replies that he never asked ... and never cared why.
(History has it that Science Hill actually got its name from a geologist who came to the area to study rocks.)
Dick, mayor of Science Hill for eight years now, said that he’d heard of the mention but had not yet seen the film, and thus had little to say on the subject.
“It’s good that we got mentioned,” he said. “... I’ll probably go see the movie now.”
He did note that the publicity could potentially raise the town’s profile. “It could help. It probably does.”
Jerry Bailey, manager of Somerset Cinemas 8, said that the mention hadn’t created much of a buzz at the Pulaski County’s local indoor movie theater (”Edge of Tomorrow” has also played at 27 Drive-In), and no one had mentioned it as being a point of interest for coming to see the film.
