Somerset — Traffic was snarled at the intersection of East Ky. 80 and Ky. 914 after an eastbound oversized tractor-trailer at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday snagged the supporting wires of the stoplights, bringing down a pole and a light in the process. According to Somerset Police Department, the safety vehicle in front of the semi struck the wires as well, but the truck driver, Francis A. Peacock, of Pa., could not be warned in time. SPD reported that a pole or line struck a construction worker nearby. The extent of the worker’s injuries and his name was not released. Workers with the Kentucky Department of Transportation were called in to replace the stoplight.

Heated sidewalks provide sparks for workers
A heated sidewalk to melt snow and ice was “quite the thing” a half century ago in a small town like Somerset. This town’s first and only electrically warmed sidewalk was installed facing Fountain Square alongside First and Farmers National Bank when the bank’s downtown headquarters building was constructed in 1963-64.As snow fell, the warm sidewalk melted a walkway about 2 feet wide alongside the bank. It was the talk of the town; quite a gimmick.
