Local resident charged with stealing $400,000 worth of jewelry

Somerset — A man who allegedly stole close to half a million dollars in jewelry was arrested as a fugitive by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department this past weekend.

Kenneth R. Tannassee, 23, of Amber Street, Somerset, was arrested Sunday on charges of being a fugitive from justice

According to the Pulaski Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Jason Flynn ran a check on Tannassee through the National Crime Information Center database and learned that Tannassee was wanted by the Lee County, Florida sheriff’s office on charges of burglary and grand theft (of $100,000 or more).

Flynn looked up Tannassee after the sheriff’s office responded to report a fight in progress at Tannassee’s local residence (Flynn was not certain how long Tannassee had lived in Pulaski County). There were no local charges filed relating to the altercation, said Flynn.

An April 1, 2011 article by the Naples Daily News of Naples, Fla., stated that Tannassee was arrested at that time as a homeless man, at age 20, on the burglary and theft charges.

According to the article, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies were told by the owner of the Flamingo Island Flea Market in that area that jewelry valued at about $100,000 was taken from the business.

After receiving a call about a suspicious subject, authorities located Tannassee in a Mazda containing more than $400,000 worth of jewelry — some jewelry boxes were open — and a number of Pokemon card wrappers, according to the article.

Tannassee was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center with no bond and is awaiting a hearing in Pulaski District Court to see if he will waive extradition back to the state of Florida, according to the sheriff’s department.
