Somerset man arrested for cultivating pot

Somerset —

As far as law enforcement is concerned, marijuana plants are not an ideal way to spruce up one’s home.
However, that’s just what officers found in one downtown home Thursday night, according to the Somerset Police Department, leading to the arrest of a local man.
Harold Wayne Wilds, 52, of 106 Beecher Street, was charged with cultivating marijuana, trafficking in marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
At around 9 p.m. officers responded to a report of a “domestic situation” in the basement of Wilds’ home, according to Lt. Shannon Smith of the Somerset Police Department.
“There was another couple living in the basement,” said Smith. “The officers investigating the situation went to status check the regular part of the residence and smelled  the odor of marijuana being smoked inside.”
Upstairs, officers observed evidence of marijuana and obtained a search warrant said Smith. That led to officers allegedly uncovering a total of 40 marijuana plants as part of the indoor grow operation.
Also found were a handgun, grow lights, and potting soil, said Smith.
Officer Justin Creech arrested Wilds, the primary occupant of the residence, and charged him with the above offenses. Wilds was lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.
“It’s not an everyday thing,” said Smith. “It’s not uncommon to find a plant or two here and there, but 40 plants in an indoor grow setting (is unusual in Somerset).”
Due to the labor-intensive process of dealing a grow this large, officers were on the scene until after 3 a.m., according to Smith; “Everything has to be dismantled and processed.”
