Somerset Police open office on SCC Campus

SPD-SCC partnership allows easier access for south end of Somerset

Somerset —

An effort between one local police agency and Somerset Community College has led to a new location for officers to carry out their duties.
Officers with the Somerset Police Department now have additional office space to conduct interviews and complete paperwork, thanks to a partnership between SPD and the college.
“The new workspace allows officers and detectives a location to conduct their work on the south end of the city, where call volume is traditionally higher,” stated SPD Lt. Shannon Smith through a press release. “It won’t replace the Somerset Mall Substation, but allows 24-hours access after the mall has closed.”
SPD currently operates from two places — the mall substation, and Somerset City Hall, where the main SPD office is located.
Larry Abbott, chief operations officer for SCC, handed the keys to the office space on the south campus to SPD’s acting chief, Major Doug Nelson, earlier this month.
“There’s always been a strong working relationship between the Somerset Community College and the Somerset Police Department,” Nelson said through the press release. “This added partnership will help keep our resources evenly distributed.
“Officers who are assigned to the south sectors can conduct their paperwork and office work closer to their area of responsibility,” Nelson added.
Abbott said SCC “is excited for the opportunity to partner with the Somerset Police Department.
“This will provide the SPD with (an) after-hours office that is centrally located within the city,” Abbott said through the press release. “It will provide for increased law enforcement visibility on campus and has the potential to reduce response time to 911 calls.”
