Winds whip Nelson Valley house fire into raging inferno

Science Hill —

Several local fire departments were called Tuesday to a home located about three miles north of Somerset after it caught fire.
Fire fighters with the Science Hill and Dabney volunteer fire departments were called to a blaze at a home at 1930 Nelson Valley Road, off Ky. 39, just before 3 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived on the scene minutes later, the blaze had already engulfed the building.
Josh Whitis, assistant chief with Science Hill Fire Department, said the owner and resident of the home, Kathy Akin, wasn’t there when the fire started.
Tuesday’s strong winds helped the fire grow quickly.
Firefighters soon called for assistance and tanker trucks from the Somerset Fire Department.
“Most of our areas we cover, we don’t have hydrants to get water from ... we have to use tankers,” said Whitis.
No one was injured fighting the blaze, but Somerset-Pulaski County EMS was called to the home and placed on standby.
Whitis said firefighters stayed on the scene until around 5:30 p.m.
The home was deemed a total loss, and fire officials aren’t sure yet what caused the blaze.
Pulaski County Public Safety Director Tiger Robinson also assisted with the fire.
