Pulaski man indicted for allegedly attempting to shoot his parents

Somerset — A Pulaski County man was indicted on attempted murder charges connected with a summer shooting incident.

Anthony Merrick, 51, of 4124 North Ky. 1247, Somerset, was charged with two counts of attempted murder after he allegedly tried to shoot his parents during an Aug. 15 incident.

According to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 15, deputies and detectives responded to Merrick’s address at 4124 North Ky. 1247. There, they allegedly found Merrick lying in the driveway of the residence.

The investigation revealed that Merrick had gotten into a confrontation with his parents, identified in the indictment as Enza and Arvil Merrick, inside their residence. Anthony Merrick, who was armed with a rifle, allegedly threatened to kill his parents and several shots were fired.

A struggle ensued in which Anthony Merrick was disarmed, according to the sheriff’s department. The parents left the home and called for help. Merrick allegedly pursued them out of the house, continuing to make threats, at which time he was taken to the ground where he was found with responders arrived.

Anthony Merrick was treated at the scene by EMS and later flown to UK for self-sustained injuries that occurred prior to the confrontation. An arrest warrant for Anthony Merrick was obtained by Det. John Hutchinson. Merrick was later arrested by University of Kentucky campus police.

An indictment is an accusation only, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
