The boat-launching ramp and parking lot at Waitsboro Recreation Area will be closed Tuesday through Friday next week for bank stabilization.
Judy Daulton, park ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said banks on the shoulder of the parking lot will be stabilized with riprap, a permanent cover of rocks typical of that used at most Corps lakes.
Daulton said the ramp and parking lot are being closed as a safety precaution. There is a chance a person or vehicle could be hit by a falling rock, she said.
The camping area at Waitsboro has been closed since October 27. The campground operates seasonally and is always closed during the winter. The boat ramp and parking lot are normally open year-round.
Waitsboro Recreation Area, located off U.S. 27 north of Burnside, has 25 campsites, most with electric and water hook-ups. Many of the sites are located along the main lake with foot access to the water.
Closing of the popular boat-launching ramp at Waitsboro for four days during the fall fishing season could create a minor problem for fishermen. The boat ramp at Fishing Creek Recreation Area across the Lake from Pulaski County Park is not usable because of the current lake level. The lake is being held at 690 feet above sea level or below to facilitate clean-up work at Wolf Creek Dam. Daulton said the Fishing Creek ramp is probably out of the water.
One option is Pulaski County Park. Vickie McQueary, manager of county-operated park, said the boat ramp at the park is still in the water and usable.
Probably the next closest public ramp is at Cumberland Point Recreation Area, off Ky. 761 southwest of Nancy.
