Grand jury will hear case of man who allegedly threatened to kill his parents

Somerset — A Pulaski County man charged with attempted murder for allegedly threatening his parents with a gun, will see his case go before a grand jury

Anthony Merrick, 50, of North Ky. 1247, appeared Monday in Pulaski District Court before Judge Katie Wood for a preliminary hearing.

Merrick was arrested Thursday, Aug. 15 and charged with two counts of attempted murder after law enforcement officials were called to his address at 4124 North Ky. 1247.

According to information from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, emergency workers found Merrick, 50, lying in the driveway of the residence after they received a report of shots fired there at around 10:30 a.m. Aug. 15.

The investigation revealed that Merrick had gotten into a confrontation with his parents inside their residence. Merrick, who was armed with a rifle, allegedly threatened to kill his parents and several shots were fired.

A struggle ensued in which Merrick was disarmed, according to the sheriff’s department. The parents left the home and called for help. Merrick allegedly pursued them out of the house, continuing to make threats, at which time he was taken to the ground where he was found when responders arrived.

Merrick was treated at the scene by EMS and later flown to UK for self-sustained injuries that occurred prior to the confrontation. An arrest warrant for Merrick was obtained by Det. John Hutchinson. Merrick was later arrested by University of Kentucky campus police.

Pulaski County Commonwealth’s Attorney Martin Hatfield said Judge Wood found probable cause to send Merrick’s case on to the grand jury for review. Now, the grand jury will decide whether to indict Merrick on the attempted murder charges.

Hatfield said Merrick’s bond was set at $50,000 cash or property. He remains in the Pulaski County Detention Center.

A review hearing was set for sometime in October.
