Local man facing child porn charges is in custody

Somerset — A Somerset man charged with downloading child pornography was located here in Pulaski County after disappearing from the sight of the legal system, according to Somerset Police.

Gordon J. Bowers, 49, of North Linwood Drive in Somerset, was allegedly found last week walking on Ky. 192 and taken back into custody.

Bowers was initially arrested in February by the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office and charged with four counts of possession of child pornography, a Class D felony.

As an employee of the Division of Mine Reclamation in London, Ky., Bowers was allegedly discovered downloading pornographic images onto his work computer.

State news outlets reported last Friday that police found Bowers’ car in Russell County, and that an arrest warrant was issued for him after he failed to show up for a scheduled court appearance.

According to the website for the Laurel County Detention Center, however, Bowers is listed as an inmate, having been booked February 28 — last Friday.

Capt. Shannon Smith of the Somerset Police Department said that Bowers had been reported missing by his family and so local law enforcement went on the search for him, “the way we would for any missing person,” said Smith.

Smith said that Bowers was found walking on Ky. 192 and was picked up by an officer before being transferred elsewhere by another agency.

“We located him and the attorney general took him into custody,” said Smith, who was unable to offer too many specifics since the case actually belongs to the Kentucky Attorney General’s office.

“We assisted them in the case they had,” said Smith.
