Oak Hill shooting was self-inflicted

Somerset — What was initially thought to be a drive-by shooting in the Oak Hill community yesterday afternoon is now being investigated as self-inflicted.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement last night that the victim, whose name is being withheld “due to the nature of the investigation,” suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Det. Brett Whitaker said the victim was treated at the scene by Somerset-Pulaski County EMS personnel and then transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. He was later airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Whitaker did not know the condition of the victim last night.

Initial reports were disturbing: Somerset Police Department and Pulaski Sheriff’s Department units were called to the Oak Hill Plaza to meet a private vehicle with a gunshot victim inside.

“Initial reports to investigators suggested the victim was with friends on Deck Drive when he received a gunshot wound from an unknown, unseen assailant,” Whitaker said in a statement.

However, it was soon revealed there was no outside shooter.

“After interviewing several witnesses, investigators learned the suspect was toying with a handgun when it discharged, striking him in the chest,” Whitaker said.

Whitaker said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident are continuing.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Somerset Police Department.
