The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department received a clean audit report based on its 2011-2012 tax collection operations.
Kentucky State Auditor Adam Edelen on Friday stated through a press release that “the audit found that (Pulaski County Sheriff Todd Wood’s) financial statements fairly represents the taxes charged, credited and paid, for the period April 16, 2011 through April 16, 2012, in conformity with the modified cash basis of accounting.”
Edelen also stated that the state found no instances of noncompliance, and no issues over internal control of the tax operations were found.
According to the audit report, which can be accessed at www.auditor.ky.gov, Wood’s office collected taxes totaling $23,061,472 for the 2011 tax year, retaining commissions of $787,116 to operate the office. Wood’s office also distributed $22,224,657 to the taxing districts in the county for the 2011 tax year.
Wood praised his team in his tax and fee offices for their hard work in carrying out their duties.
“It is certainly a team effort and all those ladies do an absolutely incredible job,” said Wood.
The sheriff’s department’s tax collection office is overseen by Ella Girdler, and its fee collection office — which is audited through a separate state audit — is run by Teresa Brummett.
“They do a tremendous job of working together,” said Wood. “Every penny taken in is accounted for, the tax districts get the money they need.
“It runs so very smoothly, so it’s a credit to those individuals,” Wood added.
The sheriff’s department’s responsibilities include collecting property taxes, providing law enforcement and performing services for the county fiscal court and courts of justice. The sheriff’s department is funded through statutory commissions and fees collected in conjunction with these duties.
