Local man dies in Ky. 1247 crash

Somerset —

A Pulaski County man was killed Thursday in a one-vehicle car crash.
Emergency workers were called to a location around five miles north of Somerset on North Ky. 1247 at 8:08 a.m. Thursday after they received a report of a one-vehicle accident.
An investigation carried out by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department at the scene of the accident, located just north of the intersection of Ky. 1247 and Raleigh Drive, revealed that the crash happened when a northbound 1998 Ford Mustang, driven by Travis New, 25, of Wayne Street, Science Hill, left the east side of Ky. 1247.
“The mustang struck an embankment, becoming airborne, and while still traveling (north) struck a utility pole,” according to the sheriff’s department.
The Mustang hit the utility pole at such a force that it completely severed the pole in two.
The Mustang then came to a rest upright on the east side of Ky. 1247, facing south.
New was partially ejected from the vehicle when the crash happened, according to the sheriff’s department.
New was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office.
Pulaski County Coroner Chuck Godbey said it appeared that New died as a result of “massive blunt head trauma.”
Pulaski County Sheriff Todd Wood said evidence found at the scene, along with witness statements, suggested speed was a factor in the accident.
“There was a witness who indicated they had seen (New’s car) shortly before the accident and it appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed,” said Wood.
Wood said investigators weren’t sure how quickly the car was traveling when the accident happened.
Emergency workers stayed at the scene until around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Along with the coroner’s office, the sheriff’s department was assisted by the Science Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Somerset-Pulaski County EMS.
